Katherine Hocker grew up in Juneau, Alaska, left to attend Harvard University where she graduated with a degree in biology, and then returned to live in Juneau. She also has a graduate certificate in scientific illustration from UC Santa Cruz, and currently works as a writer, illustrator and teacher. She has written and/or illustrated four children's books, and two books for adults, all dealing with the natural world.
Cheryl Cook spent her childhood at the beach and never left. She has a degree in Marine Biology from Humboldt State University and is currently a boat captain in Glacier Bay and Juneau, Alaska. Watching whales is both vocation and avocation.
